Kalanianaole Highway

My favorite road in the world.

Kalanianaole Highway is usually our way to Costco.  Why would I want to go through Honolulu traffic when I can see this (after you look at the photos, you’ll understand).  The upside is a relaxing trip with scenic views of the ocean.  The downside is that we’re usually on a schedule and can’t stop to take in the sights.

That’s why when our visitors asked to do some sightseeing, we knew where to go…and finally got to drive along the Kalanianaole the way everyone should.  Stopping as much as possible, we had a lot of fun taking it all in.  Out of all the places on Oahu, I’ll miss this drive the most.  There’s just something about it that makes me feel at home, even in the daunting presence of the endless blue ocean.

That’s our peninsula, behind the famous Lanikai Mokes.  It’s also called Turtle Rock, I believe.  Can you tell why?

Hanauma Bay is THE place to snorkel on Oahu.  There is a fee to enter the bay, but not to get a glimpse of it from the top.  Bonus: lots of shade.

Opened seed pods.  I will always love the little things the most.

Porterweed.  This neat little flower is a sign of development and disturbed roadside areas, but it does feed bees and butterflies.  Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

A tangled eucalyptus trunk leading to a piece of trash, an unfortunate representation of many Hawaiian tourist attractions.

Halona (lookout) blowhole, really exciting for kids, really hot in the sun.

These are the distinctive wildlife sanctuaries called Rabbit Island (Manana) and Turtle Island (Kaohikaipu).

Seeing a Hawaiian Honu is always a magical experience.  Makai Research Pier is open to the public during specific hours and while we walked along, we were lucky enough to spot one.

It felt great to finally get some photos of places I’m always driving next to, virtually ignoring.  A part of me always does so in wonder, knowing that I must be missing something beautiful.  I can’t be wrong.
